Sup folks!

So yeah, I stopped playing 40k and blogging having just lost any interest in the game at the end of 6th. I'm not going to go on about why in length, but let's just say that the game turned into something that didn't offer the kind of play I wanted!

Since then I've been trying out a bunch of good games, including X-wing and Dicemasters and playing in the odd small tournament and doing pretty well getting 1st or 2nd. Sadly neither of these are very well supported locally so after changing games clubs a couple of times I've found my new thing - Warmachine!

I've also decided that now is the time to start posting again, so I'm planning on putting up a mix of articles including list analysis, battle and tournament reports, links to interesting blogs from other sites and hobby posts.

If anyone happens to stubble across the site please feel free to leave a comment!

Phew! Well the final is
done and congrats to Josh Roberts on 1st place with
beast-star.

I had a great time,
playing 6 tough games against 6 quality opponents (including the
winner of the last two finals and three members of Scotland's ETC
team) fighting through 2 beast-stars, a screamer-star, 2 Tau lists
and a Tiggy+Coteaz marine list to make a mid-table finish. I'm happy
with that given that I've only played maybe 12 times since the
qualifier in October (pesky real life!) and am still fairly new to
the tournament scene. I know I could do better with more practice though!

Great to see Mike and Luke from Death or Glory and a huge thank you to the
Brighton Warlords guys for letting me tag along. Lee was a legend for
stepping up to the plate at short notice and driving after Pete
injured his leg and me, Will and Alex tucked into the back for a very
cosy 5 hour drive up from the south coast. Great guys and a good fun
journey.

The venue was awesome,
even if it was freezing! Playing in a church really suited the gothic
atmosphere of the 40k universe and there was plenty of space around
the tables which was a treat compared to the spacing at Brighton. I
did find it a bit odd that they'd put a shop in the apse and had made
the alter the till though! All the tables had a decent amount of
terrain and the venue had an on site cafe too, so no complaints
there. There was even morning doughnuts and a large subway lunch
included both days, which really helped save time between games.

Looking at the range of
armies deathstars made up about 7/10 of the top 10 armies. In total I think about 1/5 of the armies included a deathstar, including:

7 beast-stars (5 made top 10, including 1st and 2nd)

2+ screamer council (including 3rdand 8th place)

1 centurion-star (4th place)
At least 1 Farsight-bomb

However, there were very
few fliers in total and AV13+ spam lists. The lack of fliers is likely due to the allowance of Forge World and the threat of sabres and hyperios launchers. Saying that, very few people bought these either! I was expecting more Forge World, with only two players (including myself) running thudds and I only recall seeing a few other FW units all weekend, which included a necron pylon and a sicarius.

Overall the whole event ran really smoothly thanks to the very
well organised and friendly TOs. Good job chaps!
I am currently writing
up the games and some post-tournament analysis and will also put up
some photos of the the best painted armies and terrain as separate
post.

Thanks to all the 40kGT
team for a great event and I definitely hope to make it back next
year!

Happy so far with two wins and a very narrow loss to Scotland's current ETC captain.
Would have had it but we timed out turn 4 (measuring 2" spacing on every model every turn takes a while, but against thudds it is a good idea!).

All three opponents have been great and the venue is really cool and has plenty of space. Actually so cool I will need a thicker jumper tomorrow!

Tomorrow is Emperor's Will vs pure Eldar, with Purge then Big Guns to finish. I'll be pleased if I can squeeze out one more win, but will be pushing for more!Sentinelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13483874659853638814noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1711786341778745116.post-70204002915588926102014-03-15T00:39:00.000-07:002014-03-15T00:39:11.892-07:0040kGT Final This Weekend! So this weekend is the big one, the 40kGT Final!
Everything is modelled and painted and ready to go. I'd have liked to get some more games in to practice, but I'm happy with the list and I'm ready as I can be. I really have no idea how I'll do, but I'm just happy to turn up and get some games in.
I've been meaning to get round to making something like this for, oh, maybe 3 or more years now but spurred on by the looming 40kGT Final I've eventually gotten round to making some templates for exploded rhino-chassis vehicles.

I usually use dice to mark the corners, but having printed these is going to make it a lot easier and avoids picking up the dice by mistake!

Since I'm a sharing kind of guy, I thought I'd post up the image in case anyone else might find it useful. Just print on A4 thick paper or card without scaling and they should come out the right size.Sentinelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13483874659853638814noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1711786341778745116.post-76974768301689769872014-02-22T07:04:00.000-08:002014-02-22T08:49:18.599-08:00Total Immersion Radio

This is the start of a new series focused on sharing great music to game to. Each post will bring you a different track, which will be added to the brand new Total Immersion Radio playlist over on Spotify.

I'd also like to try out a bit of an experiment here, so I'm going to start by making this a collaborative playlist - meaning you guys can add songs too! Or you can leave suggestions in the comments sections or email me at totalimmersion@gmail.com. Hopefully this will work out and we can all enjoy some great songs and maybe find some stuff that we haven't heard before.
Music is great. Gaming is great. Both together is awesome!

So in the spirit of sharing great music I have installed the
Spotify Play Button on the blog (bottom right). I usually listen to alternative/metal through
choice, but there are two tracks I'm particularly obsessed with at the moment
that are a little different – Hate or Glory by Gesafflestein (dark edgy techno - just
epic when the main beat drops) and Say Something by A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera (beautiful melodic duet - US readers probably know this already, but it's just breaking in the UK).

As well as a few other cosmetic refinements I've also added a blog email address (totalimmersionwargaming@gmail.com),
which can be found on the new Contact page too, just in case anyone ever wants to get in
touch.

I thought I'd put up the list that I'm working on for the 40k GT finals in March. This list has developed from the thinking behind this post and the following discussions on the blog and at the club, so thanks to everyone who contributed their thoughts (Coyote, hornywingythingy and Jamie in particular).

As usual, this is intended to be a take-on-all-comers list but it is worth nothing that this list has not been designed to deal with Lords of War, S:D weapons or AV15, as these have been banned from the final.
Changes
Not as killy as the GK variant, but the loss of marine stat lines and
ATSKNF potentially made the GK primary list a little too glass hammer. Keeping with SW primary, my top priority was to incorporate an inquisitor. While I have had to swap out two squads of plasma hunters for the plasma acolytes to find the points, I'm still one scoring unit up thanks to the additional sabres compared to the qualifier list. The additional plasma is also helpful against MCs, especially with 2+ saves (riptides, dreadknights).

I swapped out the 6 hyperios launchers (3x 2) for 4 additional las-sabres (1x3 and 1x1)
to give me more scoring units (having lost a couple by swapping in the
plasma acolytes), limit the additional VPs I was giving up in The
Scouring (I take the FA version of the hyperios), give me more AP2 vs 2+
save targets (riptides, broadsides, buff-commanders, dreadknights) and a better chance to penetrate and explode AV13+ targets.

Having a second psyker means that I have the option of keeping Jaws on the rune priest if I'm facing low initiative armies, such as riptide-spam without the 4d6 Deny the Witch amulet or Necrons. It also frees the rune priest up to push into mid-field to position the 24" 4+ psychic denial bubble while still having a prescience babysitter for the quads. I also have the option of 3 rolls on the Divination table, aiming for Perfect Timing but always being able to have one Prescience for the quad launchers. I find that perfect timing works best hopping between with the squad of 3 sabres, CCS and quads, depending on the targets.
Playtesting
I've run this list in a couple of test games now (2 out of my 6 games since October!) and am very happy with how it's holding together so far. The first game was vs Tau (buff commander, riptide, missile 'sides, skyray, sniper team with ethereal and min troops) with White Scar allies (Khan, 2x 5 grav bikers, 4 FW hyperios launchers) in Big Guns, resulting in a 13-0 win to me (I had 4/5 objectives and killed the ethereal, secondaries aren't used to determine the result at the GT). To be fair it was one of those rare games where I was rolling hot and my opponent had terrible luck at key times, so it would normally have been much closer!

CMON, Ringil (GW)

The second was vs Eldar (6 serpents, 2 FW hornets and a night spinner, all with holo-fields and led by an autharch) and somehow I pulled out a 16-0 win in The Scouring (I had all but the 1VP objective and killed both hornets, secondaries as above) having been on the back foot early on thanks to getting hammered by all the quality firepower. I honestly thought I'd lost this one by turn three, but kept at it and focused on eliminating one enemy scoring unit at a time. Both great games!

Analysis
As 6th has develops I find myself wanting more extreme
firepower to deal with the top hard to shift units, specifically
anything with a 2+ or 2++ re-rollable saves, AV13+ spam and lots of very high
toughness MCs. This means I need more high
strength, low AP shots, more torrent anti-infantry shots, good sniping
ability and as much ignores/force a re-roll cover saves as possible. The
inquisitor, quads, las-sabres and plasma all help here, topping up the
rune priest, CCS and MoO, vendetta, razorbacks and various small arms
fire that have been in the list for some time.

Summary
It will be interesting to see how the list holds up against other armies, but I think it has a decent chance and covers the usual bases pretty well - multiple mobile scoring units (if only temporarily mobile!), troop hunters, can-openers, monster killers, fly swatters, combo-breakers and minimal secondary VP targets, plus some decent psychic defense. Extreme lists will be a challenge and Purge The Alien is always difficult with MSU (but not the auto-loose many would expect), but by focusing on the mission and making it difficult to finish off scoring units I hope I have at least a fighting chance against any other list.

Games Workshop have now confirmed that Forge World units are allowed at their Throne of Skulls event.

Quote from GW's Warrior's Code:

"5. Your Army List must be selected from a current Games Workshop publication. The following list of publications are in use at events run at Warhammer World. For Warhammer 40,000 Events

• A Warhammer 40,000 Codex and/or Codex Supplement
• The Escalation, Death from the Skies and Stronghold Assault publications
• A Forge World publication (including digital updates)
• Forge World Experimental Rules
• Dataslates
• The “Horus Heresy” publications will only be in use where the Event Pack specifically says so."

I find this interesting because many look to Games Workshop events to seek affirmation of what 'standard' 40k should be. In the past one of the major arguments against FW's inclusion was that GW didn't include it at their own events.

Regardless of how competitive these events are, this is another indication of GW confirming FW's inclusion. We now have 40k approved stamps, the removal of the wording requiring an opponent's permission to use the rules, GW releasing rules for FW only models (e.g. Escalation) after the Chapterhouse case, senior staff (AD Brown) and a shared company registration number stating that GW=GW+FW+BL and possibly an integrated website this year.

Whilst it would be nice to have a BRB FAQ saying 'FW units with the '40k Approved' stamp are allowed in standard games', I think the evidence above is enough to shift the burden of proof onto the naysayers to argue how FW is not now standard 40k.
BANNER
The first thing is new and improved branding. I've been working on this on and off for a couple of months now and I'm really pleased with where I've got too. I wanted something clean and clear but developed from the 2013 version. To get my creative juices going I also looked around at some of my favourite blogs, particularly those that used strong and clearly identifiable graphic design. Credit where credit is due, so I've included some examples shown below:

The Back 40k (model's eye level view of a battlefield)

I finally settled upon the idea of cutting through a gaming board at a model's eye level, immersed in the fog of war. This gives the white slice across the bottom of the banner looking onto the terrain behind. Next I wanted the title to stand out but be part of the battle, so I made this white and bought it down to rest on the 'table', effectively setting it in the foreground. I did the same to my new avatar (see more below), added some subtle fog of war effects to break up the picture behind, added some drop shadow to bring out the text and dropped in the tag line. Finally I changed the title to 'Total Immersion' as it's much easier to say/type than 'Total Immersion Wargaming'!

I think the new design is a big improvement and much easier to read and the 2013 version. The next stage is to add a battle scene in the background with exploding debris in the foreground (see sketch version below) and this is something I'm going to have fun working on in the new year.
AVATAR
I've wanted a new avatar for a while now and had been playing around with a few ideas. I decided that I wanted something tied into the branding of the blog but less blunt than the initials. Now I have a bit of a thing for robed models and I just love the Forge World Inquisitor Lokk. Having wanted this for ages I decided to buy it as a treat having made the top 10 at Brighton in the summer. As much as I like the sword, I've always wanted to give the model more weight/balance with a big beefy flail. The deathwing one fit the bill perfectly, so after a bit of conversion work I had myself my new commander and basis for my avatar.

Since I like seeing design development and behind the scenes stuff, I've shown the development images below in case anyone's interested too!
POSTS
I'm planning more CONCEPTS: articles, plus the usual Food For Thought short posts on any topics I find interesting or worth sharing. Assuming real life doesn't get in the way I will be heading to a few tournaments, including the Indy GT final in March, so I expect to post up tournament reports and pictures. I also hope to do some more battle reports, but these take me an age to write to get to the level I think is really tactically engaging. I need to work out a quicker way of doing these! My hobbying is concentrated around getting ready for tournaments, so I expect to post up my progress either here or on the Facebook page as I have done in 2013.

SUMMARY
2013 was a great year for the blog and I hope that 2014 will be the same. Given the releases in the last couple of months (Escalation, Stronghold, formations, dataslates, Forge World changing their permission wording) on top of a whirlwind codex and supplement release schedule over the past 12 months, it's shaping up to be a very interesting year ahead. Thanks to everyone for reading and I'm really looking forward to seeing what the new year will bring. Happy New Year!Sentinelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13483874659853638814noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1711786341778745116.post-71792634952358173212013-12-30T17:35:00.002-08:002013-12-30T17:35:58.809-08:00Year in Review 2013

This year I had two major goals – qualify for the 40k GT national finals and try and get the blog noticed. It's been a good year!
GAMING
It's been a landmark year for gaming for me. I managed to break into the top 10 at the summer Brighton event (10/40), hit my main target of qualifying for the GT finals (8/43) and managed 3/3 wins at the club's friendly Christmas tournament (2/12, missing first place on old VPs). Given that real life can be a little complicated, turning up to any of these events is a major victory in itself! I've also had some great club and casual games throughout the year, so thank you to everyone I've played for some good times.

I've had fun running my Space Wolves primary, developing my Imperial Guard and now Inquisition allies. I still enjoy MSU razorspam for mobile scoring, backed up by the vendetta, Forge World anti-air (lascannon sabre platforms and hyperios missile launchers) and the potent IG heavy quad launchers (aka thudd guns). I'm now looking at how to react to the dramatic changes Escalation and Stronghold Assault have brought but will probably cover this a bit more in my next post!

HOBBY
This year's hobbying has all been about my new Imperial Guard, with a slight diversion into some scratch built hyperios launchers for my wolves. I love hobbying when I'm doing but it's not something I do to relax and free time during the day is a rarity. However, those thudd guns aren't going to paint themselves and I've been able to get the following done to at least a reasonable level (cleaned, assembled, painted to three colours minimum, shaded, based, some conversion work):

Plus I assembled and undercoated 10 Grey Knight Strike Squad models, including 4 sets of magnetised arms for weapon swaps. Actually that seems like quite a lot when I list it out!

I like the look of the guard models, having gone for a mix of Maxmini headswaps on cadian bodies, steel legion, converted cultists (no chaos icons) and robed commanders. I'm aiming for a renegade look for a bunch of fringe loyalists, used by the inquisition as and when the need arises. Getting there I hope!

I enjoyed converting the inquisitor Lokk model the most, using a deathwing flail instead of a sword. I'm even going to use this as my avatar and new site branding is on it's way for the new year. The most difficult bits were the hyperios launchers (took an age and a lot of effort!) and converting the plasma guns for the command squad (from right handed space wolf guns to left handed cultist models).

I've been pleased to get some good soft scores at tournaments this year, getting maximum points at the qualifier (25/25) and club event (10/10), and everything but true WYSIWYG at Brighton (34/40). The requirements for each of these weren't horrendous, with the exception of true WYSIWYG – all weapons and grenades for wolves and guard is a lot of work! While I'm not a huge fan of including soft scores in competitive gaming, when the points are deliberately very easy to get (just as well as I don't consider myself to be a great painter!) and published well in advance there really aren't any excuses for not putting in the time if you want the points. I also like having something to aim for and enjoy playing against fully painted armies, so I can't really complain too much!
BLOG
It's been a busy year for the blog, having registered with a big bunch of networks (thanks guys) and kicking out just over a post a week. Not bad considering that this is a solo effort with a dodgy internet connection! In 12 months the blog has gone from 0 followers and 1000 hits to 27 followers and 15000 hits, so a big thank you to everyone who's joined the site, stopped by to leave comments and taken the time to read a few of my ramblings.

I 'd say that I've enjoyed writing the CONCEPTS: articles the most and these are really the main source of original content for the site. Taking a detailed, and I hope even-handed, look at some of the fundamental aspects of the hobby is something that really interests me. This year I've covered topics including list writing, burnout and spam, some of which even made it into House of Paincakes weekly top ten (cheers Von)!

Also a big thank you to the Death or Glory boys for inviting me to join their blog. Having played a couple of games against the DoG team members in the Brighton summer tournament I was delighted when Mike came over, slapped me on the shoulder and asked if I was interested in contributing. To be fair they do ask a lot of players and I don't think he'd read this blog at the time, but I jumped at the chance anyway!

SUMMARY
2013 has been a great year for gaming and I'm loving immersing myself in the hobby. For all the nerdrage and drama on the internet there is also some really positive and interesting stuff going on. Hopefully this blog has contributed a little to the latter and I continue to get a lot out of playing and posting.

Thanks again to everybody I've played against and who's read the blog and I hope you've enjoyed this last year as much as I have!

This CONCEPTS article looks at troops - why we need them, how to protect them and useful tools for hunting them down.

Quick note - I had finished writing this just before Escalation and Stronghold Assault were released but have now added a few extra points. Although I expect these releases to redefine 40k, they have not changed the way that the basic missions are won. How we build our lists will need to change and adapt, but the requirements to actually win the game are the same.

Definition
Troops units are usually scoring, allowing them to control or deny objectives when within 3" of the marker. Exceptions generally include vehicles, embarked units, swarms, units that are falling back or anything with a special rule stating that they can never score (e.g. fenrisian wolf packs). The special mission rules for Big Guns Never Tire and The Scouring make heavy support and fast attack slots scoring (but not denial units), even if they are, for example, vehicles. See pages 123 and 128-129 of the small rule book for more.

Risk
Personally, I think that a large majority of the tournament armies I see run very light on troops in favour of bigger threats. I can understand why, especially if an army has troops that don't really contribute much other than sitting on an objective - this is part of the reason I like codexes with troops that can be a threat not just a deckchair unit!

However, the risk with running a small number of troops is that these key units will be focused on in objective games to deny your scoring ability. Even if your opponent is getting hammered, if they can wipe out all your troops they can force a draw on the primary mission, which leaves you relying on secondaries to win (not good if your going second due to First Blood or say if you're running a squishy HQ).

Having more uncontested scoring units on objectives than your opponent wins 4/6 of the basic missions. You also need a troop unit to pick up the Relic. It really doesn't matter how much of a beating you can take or dish out if you can't win the game (ok maybe in battlepoint tournaments, but we'll leave that for now!).

Protecting Scoring Units
A common tactic is to reserve your troops to keep them safe (the later they arrive the better). Currently the best example of this is the 3 man Elder jetbike unit due to it's incredible speed and small size, making it much easier to hide out of LOS.

Walking a backfield scoring unit in from the board edge is fine if there's conveniently an objective close by, preferably with good cover or even better line of sight blocking terrain to hide behind. But this is not always the case, so the more mobility your scoring units have the better. Being fast (jetbikes), able to deep strike (plague bearers, Farsight crisis suits), outflank (kroot) or deploy from a flier (necron warriors, IG) are all very valuable and gives you options on which objectives to go for late game.

Throw in reserve manipulation, possibly from comms relays, warlord traits, scriers gaze, Tigerius for Ultramarines, autarchs for Eldar and it's possible for some armies to have a great deal of control of when their troops come in, meaning that it's somewhat safer to run smaller number of troops as they are more likely to be alive at the end of the game when you need them. Not my preferred style, but a calculated risk for some.

I will also throw in some initial reactions to D-weapons. At the time of writing I've yet to see these in action first hand but it is clear that some traditional techniques of protecting your units, like using cover or invulnerable saves, are straight up ignored by strength D (SD) hits. However, the simultaneous advent of the Stronghold supplement gives some potential protection through layers of void shields, assuming that you can keep the enemy Lord of War (LoW) outside the bubble. Other options still include the reserves game, use of transport fliers (protecting your units from SD blasts and templates), hiding out of line of sight (LOS) where possible and using multiple small units (MSU). For MSU, a few more scoring units than usual probably isn't going to cut it against D weapons, so I'm thinking about extreme MSU as a possible starting point. Either way, it's early days for but let's keep calm and experiment to see if there is anything that works before jumping ship!

Hunting Scoring Units
Knowing that opponents may try to protect their troops by keeping them in reserve, out of sight, in cover and in transports for as long as possible, having the ability to root out hard to reach enemy scoring units is key.

One of the first things I do when I open a new codex is look for any weapons or units that have ignore cover. Then I look for anything that can fire at targets out of line of sight. Then anything with interceptor. After this I usually look to see how mobile units can be (including using transports) and what their threat range is (movement plus weapon range/typical charge distance). If any of these abilities come from a scoring unit for a reasonable amount of points, brilliant. It's also worth noting here that these abilities usually come at a premium, so it's entirely possible to miss out things like ignores cover if it's more efficient to torrent fire instead.

So it's not surprising that I typically put enemy units with the above abilities very high on my target priority list. Helldrakes, wave serpents, Tau markerlights, units with SMS, long range barrage weapons (I'm looking at you thunderfire cannons and IG artillery) and anything with interceptor (especially if it has skyfire and I'm running a flier) are in my opinion some of the biggest threats in the game. If they're allowed to rinse through my own scoring units and key threats unopposed I know I have a much smaller chance of winning the game.

Contesting Units
Something I'm thinking about more and more is the benefit of durable contesting units. These don't have to be scoring, but need to be able to get to within 3" of an objective and sit there despite concerted effort to shift them. We already see plenty of wraithknights, riptides, FMCs and dreadknights used for this (notice a theme?) but I've also seen this done well by tough combat units such as beasts and drones of Nurgle. Anything with a decent toughness, lots and lots of wounds and preferably a reasonable invulnerable save and FNP can be a royal pain in the butt to clear without D weapons, even if the damage output of these units isn't incredible. I'm becoming particularly interested in these types of units because they rely on movement rather than damage to help win the game. Anything that removes relying on rolling dice to do it's job is good for me!

List Building
So when building a list, I like to try to keep everything discussed above in mind. My priorities are:

Multiple mobile troop units, ideally with a decent threat profile. The more mobile the better.

A couple of cheap backfield scoring units that I can reserve if needed without reducing my offensive capabilities.

Scoring units that I can drop/jump/boost in my opponents backfield, preferably with the ability to kill troops (e.g. with flamers).

Troop hunters, including the ability to crack transports (including fliers). Anything with decent reach (mobility and range), ignores cover and that doesn't need line of sight is most valuable.

Threat removal. Units that can take out my opponents ability to threaten my scoring potential.

Tough/numerous/fast objective contesters.

Of course there are other battlefield roles that need to be included as well, but these are fundamental considerations when I build my lists as they are directly linked to winning the game.

Cons
Troops are often considered to be a bit of a dead-weight, not particularly dangerous and a liability to protect. This is a reality for armies without useful troops, but armies that can protect their troops for longer may be able to afford to put more points into non-scoring threats.

In early 6th, this was done very well by Necrons with their night scythes and IG with their vendettas. The durability offered by fliers in an environment with little skyfire and interceptor meant that points could be spent loading up on other offensive units (e.g. wraiths and blob squads) that were difficult to ignore. Now we have Eldar with their jetbikes and wave serpents, either as primary or an ally. The future may well hold alternatives, but the idea will remain the same - if you're troops can't do much, only take as many as you think you need and keep them as safe and as mobile as possible. Then spend your remaining points as efficiently as possible wrecking face.

Conclusion
There are a lot of good reasons to take troops choices in your army. You need scoring units to win 4/6 missions and you need a troops choice to pick up the Relic. 3/6 missions use multiple (3-6) objectives. Troops are (nearly) always scoring, so can claim objectives in each of the associated missions. However, not all codexes have effective troops and will generally try to minimise and protect these units in order to take bigger threats. In both cases the better your own army is at hunting down and removing enemy scoring units, the easier it is to win games.

It's really up to you as a general and a list builder to balance what you think you need and refine it with analysis and play testing, but if your troop units can be a legitimate threat and not just a target, all the better.

I find writing really difficult. Yeah, I know, I have a blog! One of my problems is that I don't write very quickly as I tend to think about things too much. I get a lot of associated thoughts (which is why I like to add comments in brackets like this!), so expressing myself clearly without tripping over myself can be tricky. This goes for talking too, but hey, what can you do! Another problem is that I have a tendency to use complicated language over simple words. This can get in the way of getting my point across <strike>succinctly</strike> clearly.

I was over at Sirlin's website getting a link for Playing To Win and <strike>happened upon these posts on clear writing</strike> found these:

I find this articles really inspiring. Not just in helping me to write better, but in helping me think more clearly. And being able to think and communicate more clearly when your under pressure (oh, say, at a tournament) is a good thing.

I also liked his point about only writing when you have something to say. I'm trying to <strike>take this approach with my posts</strike> do this, rather than feel <strike>obligated</strike> like I have to stick to a schedule (sheesh, this simple language thing is hard. Just as well I'm not adding in unnecessary commentary. Ah, wait...). I'm trying to write when I want to, and only about topics that really interest me. I think this is better in the long run to avoid burnout.
Thanks to Godfrey at Rites of Battle for putting up this interesting article discussing Force Organisation Chart (FOC) swaps in 40k.

The main question is whether or not they are a good thing. Personally, I love FOC swaps for the same reason I love allies - options. Anything that allows me to create different lists with loads of synergies and tactics makes me very happy (one of the reasons I also enjoy MTG). It also opens up a lot more variety and the possibility for characterful armies. The tricky thing is that more options makes balancing a game system harder and some companies are better than others at this!

I think that there will always be more powerful options than others and the competitive scene in any game system will always strive to seek out and use the best of these. It's the nature of competition and is to be expected in an environment where players are trying to win rather than play casually (neither is right or wrong). But this would be the case with or without extra options. I'd prefer to see more choice than less, as apart from anything else it allows more depth of options to choose from when looking for counters.

I don't think GW
primarily introduced allies to help balance out weaknesses in the main
codex. GW have repeatedly stated that they are a model company first, so I think it's more likely that the decision was made as it allows
more models to be sold, enabling second/third/more armies to be build up
incrementally. I welcome this, as starting a new army and getting it up to regular game size (1500-2000pts) is a huge undertaking. Being able to play with new stuff in larger battles straight away is a good thing!

I'm not saying the balance is or ever will be perfect (as much as I want it to), but I think 6th is a richer playing environment for casual and competitive play thanks to FOC swaps and allies.Sentinelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13483874659853638814noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1711786341778745116.post-84444694185283802182013-11-22T12:00:00.001-08:002013-11-22T12:00:00.314-08:00List-Fu: Inquisition vs Marines

I thought I'd post up a list that I've been working on since the rumours of Codex: Inquisition started to trickle in, but first a little bit of background...

Since the GT Heat in October I've been thinking a lot about marines in 6th. 'What marines in 6th?' you may well ask, and that's kind of the point. From what I've seen over the past year or so, many of the top performing lists have been devoid of any flavour of marine as a primary troop choice. Sure you get some examples that prove this isn't always the case, but if you look back I'd suggest that xenos and GEQ equivalent codexes have done really well. Necrons scythe/wraith wing, IG blobs and air support, Deamon Flying Circus and now screamer-star, any combination of Tau and Eldar, Chaos marines with helldrakes but cultists instead of marines... you get the idea.

Now this isn't any sort of complaint and I actually think it's great to see such a variety of armies doing well over a comparatively short space of time, compared to say half a year at a time of 'counts as' the latest marine codex. It's hard to say if this pace of change will continue and I'm not going to go into some of the theories about why GW are doing this, but at this time I guess most would agree that seeing large numbers of marines is fairly rare on the top tables at tournaments.

I think it's already been well documented that this is considered to be due to the increase of low AP cover ignoring weaponry kicking about in 6th. Baleflamers and markerlights are top contenders here, but there are a number of other ways of getting ignores cover, not least being the brilliant Perfect Timing in Divination. I think others reasons include the massive reduction in the use of mech and the resultant move towards plasma over melta. Again, not new ground here, but I've never found footslogging large groups of marines across the table to be particularly effective and I think drop pod lists leave you too exposed and static for my tastes.

So how does this relate to the recent Inquisition release and what I want to run in my lists? Henchmen. But perhaps not in the way you'd think.

Acolytes are crazy cheap at 14pts for a body and a special weapon. I'm used to having one special per 5 marines, so to be able to take 3 specials on three bodies at 42pts compared to 85pts for 5 grey hunters with a plasma gun is a massive increase in offensive potential and points efficiency. And yes I'll take the heavy bolter razorback with psybolt ammo, thank you very much. What has held me back until now is how squishy the 3 man acolyte unit is compared to a unit of 5 hunters, but as you may have guessed from the first few paragraphs, 5 power armoured dudes aren't as survivable as they used to be.

This got me thinking if there was a variation on my GT list based on acolytes rather than hunters, so I started to put together a few lists with GK primary with my fire and scoring support IG allies to see where it led. We'll get to the list in a minute, but essentially pre-Inquisition this combo offered a significant increase in quality fire power at the expense of (slightly?) more durable troops and losing battle brothers. I'm still going to have to try out the list to see if the durability is an issue or not, but I know that losing prescience on the thudds results in a serious drop in efficiency.

GW

Enter the Inquisition! Cheap access to divination, the ability to choose a generally more useable warlord table and two sweet, sweet pieces of wargear - servo skulls and the psyocculum. Being battle brothers with imperial forces opens up a lot of possibilities, particularly carpet bombing Imperial Guard. The scout/infiltrate denial is a big bonus for a shooting army if it can buy another turn to whittle down an aggressive force before they hit your lines but reducing scatter by 1d6 is a significant increase (even if it's only for a turn or two before they are chased away) for Guard.

The second item, the psyocculum, makes the bearer and their unit BS10 against units containing a psyker. Situational? Yes, but let's think about how often this situation crops up. A lot of the most powerful combinations in the game use some kind of buff-psychic powers, especially deathstars. Farseers, heralds and Tigerius are good examples. For the cost of a powerfist, adding this kind of increase in accuracy combined with, oh lets say, barrage sniping means that targeting and putting wounds on lynchpin models much more reliable. I find that with prescience up I average about 3 hits per template from the thudds. 4 is not that uncommon, especially against a slightly clumped up unit, but I usually assume 2 to be on the safe side. So that's ~36 S5 hits. That's a lot of Look Out Sir! rolls to pass. Otherwise the increase against units with brotherhood of psykers/sorcerers or even individual psykers such as deamon princes, dreadknights and tervigons can be really quite handy.

So for comparison, let me give you my GT Heats list and then the work in progress inquisition list:

1650pts Space Wolves and Imperial Guard 40kUK GT Heat 2 List
Rune Priest, Jaws, Living Lightning
(IG) Company Command Squad, Master of Ordinance

4x 5 Grey Hunters, Razorback (Heavy Bolter), plasma gun
2x 5 Grey Hunters, Razorback (Heavy Bolter), melta gun
(IG) Platoon;
Platoon Command Squad, 2x flamer
2x Infantry Squad
2x 1 Sabre Defence Platform, lascannon (IA 2 2nd Ed)

3x 2 Hyperios Missile Launchers (IA Aeronautica)
(IG) Vendetta [130pts]

(IG) Heavy Quad Launcher Battery (3 guns with 9 crew) (IA 2 2nd Ed)

1650pts

(INQ) Ordos Hereticus Inquisitor, level 1 psyker, psyocculum, 3x servo skulls (warlord)

(GK) 3x 3 Acolytes, Razorback (Heavy Bolter with psybolt, searchlight), 3x plasma gun
(GK) 2x 3 Acolytes, Razorback (Heavy Bolter with psybolt, searchlight), 3x melta gun
(IG) Platoon;
Platoon Command Squad, 4x flamer
2x Infantry Squad, mortar
4x 1 Sabre Defence Platform, lascannon (IA 2 2nd Ed)
1x 3 Sabre Defence Platforms, each with lascannon, one with extra crewman (IA 2 2nd Ed)

(IG) Vendetta [130pts]

(IG) Heavy Quad Launcher Battery (3 guns with 9 crew) (IA 2 2nd Ed)

1650pts

Coteaz goes with the servitors and noble bullet catchers (surprise!). The inquisitor
usually sits with the quads or occasionally the command squad if an
accurate ordinance blast is needed vs psykers - even better with the Burner of
Worlds (orbital large blast) or Witch Hunter (preferred enemy: psykers) warlord traits!

Pros
This list punches harder with lots more special weapons - an extra 5 plasma guns, 4 melta guns and 2 flamers. Plus S6 razorbacks, more las-sabres over hyperios launchers, 3 plasma cannons and 3 mortars. Throw in better warlord traits, scout/infiltrate lockdown, more accurate blasts and Coteaz and I'm very tempted by this build...

Cons
I'm not sure just how fragile the 3 man acolyte squads will be and if they are worth the gains in firepower. Possibly too glass hammer? Weaker scoring, but there are still a lot of units thanks to the MSU build and the sabres score too. I've also lost the rune priest's anti-psyker, but to be honest he's usually tucked in the back to avoid giving up warlord and only works 50% of the time, I don't think this is a big loss.

Play testing is required. I've only tried henchmen once, so I'm interested to see how they work out. Any thoughts welcome!

A rules question for you all before I sign off - How do you think multiple barrages work with orbital blasts like the Master of Ordinance or the Burner of Worlds warlord trait? Page 34 of the mini-rule book states that the closest blast is placed first, then the others flip off via a scatter dice. So say a mortar is placed first (ideally with BS10 using the psyocculum) and the others flip off. Does this circumvent the 'orbital' or equivalent rule which states that this blast always scatters (for example) the full 2d6? Answers with page numbers appreciated!

How far would you go to win a game? This is the excellent question that Spicerack asks over on 40k War Zone.

This is an easy one for me. Cheating is too far. Everything else with in the rules is fair game on
one condition - that both players are truly playing to win based on the
rules.

I enjoy 40k most when I'm trying to win, so I like competitive play.
Sure, I enjoy those epic moments when something cinematic happens and I
will never forget my first tournament playing with a fully painted army.
But nothing beats crafting a list and pushing as hard as you can to win
(this includes pre-game prep too). The winning bit doesn't actually
matter to me as much, and placing in a tournament is a measure of my
development as a competitive gamer. For me the fun bit is trying as hard
as I can to see how good I can get.

There is a fantastic book by Sirlin called 'Playing to Win' (free on his own website).
One of the fundamental points of the book asks players to look at what
holds us back as gamers from playing by the game's rules, contrasting
this against players who use a self imposed set of rules (e.g. I only
play with X army, that would never happen in the fluff, claiming that
something's not fair because they didn't make the effort to learn the
rules properly, etc.) and then judging others for not following their definition of winning.

For
me it's really important to agree what kind/style of game I'm going to
play with my opponent before the game starts. If it's a relaxed,
low-powered game than that's cool (although I still enjoy hardcore
more!). If it's an experimental 'I don't know if this is good or
terrible but I want to give it a go' game then great. My favourite is
still a 'no-holds-barred no-mercy given none asked hardcore' game. I'll
add here that all of these can be done in a polite and
non-confrontational way!

I will play anything really
(still a strong preference for hardcore), but I want to avoid a
situation where players do not agree on what 'winning' is, resulting is
neither player having a good time.

Competitive
tournaments should be an environment where everyone has a common
definition of winning (as defined by the basic game rules or tournament
variations). In this situation we should be applauding anyone who earns
their win fair and square. And then keep on trying to beat them next
time!

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that nobody really wins if you're not playing the same game. So check first!

Some of my favourite posts on other sites are the 'how to beat army X' articles. If you don't have access to players or clubs where the latest power builds are played, being able to read up on how they work and how to approach them gives you a much better chance of forming a plan on how you're going to tackle them.

For Tau, recognising their typical weaknesses, such as limited mobility outside of jump suits, general reliance on riptides or allies for contesting/scoring distant objectives, vulnerable ethereals giving up a potentially game changing VP (think Relic and Emperors Will) and relatively squishy troops, means that you can consider how best to place objective markers, deploy your army and set up your target priority through the game.

Matt-Shadowlord does a great job of discussing these points and more over on 3++ here and here. Last weekend I attended my second tournament of the year, Heat 2 of the 40kGT in Brighton. Having managed to place in the top ten in July at another tournament at Brighton I was hoping that my refined list would help me into the top half to qualify for the national finals in March.

DAY 1

Game 1: Crusade vs Daemons.

Screamers, beasts and drones were all over me on turn 2, but I was winning when we timed out. However, the TO came over and gave us extra time into lunch to get turn 5 in. Timing is critical when diving onto objectives, and I'd already sacrificed a turn of shooting to get into position because I could tell we weren't going to get turn 5 in within time. Result = loss. Quite frustrated at that, but there was really nothing I could do. Oh well!

Game 2: Relic vs IG & Ultramarines

Tigerius and his grav-toting biker friends accompanied a full commissar led blob which mostly hid under his skyshield shooting lascannons. I managed to take out 75% of the enemy with minimal significant loss. Anything of his that got close to the relic died. Manticore and 3 vendettas didn't last long either! Good game.

Game 3: Scouring vs Daemons & CSM

I made a big mistake keeping all my razors off the board. Then I messed up my psychic powers, positioning and target priority all game. Didn't play well at all, lost fair and square. I don't usually make that many mistakes, and I paid for it!

DAY 2

Well after a disappointing first day I wasn't holding out much hope for getting a top half finish to qualify for the finals. I needed two more wins and a draw to guarantee a place, but one of the games was killpoints (always a hard one with MSU lists) and I'd found out on Saturday that I'd be playing against Tau/Eldar in Emperor's Will next...

Game 4 Emperor's Will vs Tau & Eldar

Going second, I deployed out of range for most of the enemy and only lost a thudd first turn. I couldn't stop one of the riptides and broadside units contesting my objective, but he only had one troops choice left to claim his and I flamed the kroot off and then scored it for myself with the PCS.

Things got a bit difficult at this point, as he'd apparently asked if there was anything in the vendetta when it came on. Unfortunately I don't remember this at all (having declared the unit embarked at deployment), but came in on the extreme right flank out of range from the broadsides and the fusion gun, so only the single remaining riptide's ion cannon had the chance to shoot. I also took out the single skyray that turn, eliminating his only skyfire unit.

Could he have fired a load of shots from the two broadside units and bought it down? Sure. But that fire wouldn't have been going elsewhere, particularly the thudds, so it may have worked out that I'd have been able to kill the last unit of kroot anyway, drawing objectives but then winning by killing the ethereal (secondaries at the GT don't count towards the result, but instead contributed towards tournament points). Who knows, but it was unfortunate to have the misunderstanding spoil an otherwise mostly amicable game.

Game 5: Purge vs CSM & Daemons

After introducing myself I said that this would probably be my opponent's easiest win of the tournament, as my list offers a 'target rich' environment with over 20 killpoints available. Comparing this to the compact 10 offered by the 4 FMC, 2 helldrakes and handful of cultists, marines in a rhino and plaguebearers, it wasn't looking good. Throw in hammer and anvil deployment and a huge (10"+) LOS blocking terrain for the FMCs to hide behind and getting siezed, things went from grim to grimmer! Oh, and one daemon prince got warp tether...

A couple of key lucky dice rolls helped keep me in the fight early on though, when I exploded the first helldrake with a sabre lascannon and the rhino with a MoO barrage hit. By the end of the game I'd also killed the other 'drake and three of the daemon princes, but had somehow only managed to lose a hyperios unit, 3 razors and a hunter squad!

Best game of the weekend by far, laughing all the way through, with an unexpected win to boot!

Game 6: Big Guns vs Eldar

2 wraithknights, Eldrad and reapers in a bastion and 3 DAVU waveserpents. Joy! Fortress of redemption (ruin) in the middle for the wraithknights to hide behind? Yep. Piloted by an ETC player? Excellent. Bring it on!

My opponent had already qualified in Heat 1 and was standing in to even out the numbers. Had this not been the case he may have focused a little more but we ended up with a friendly game and a win to me. Result!

Conclusion

After a dire first day, I somehow managed to pull three wins out of the bag day 2, placing 8th out of 45 against some very strong competition. Really happy with the result, and managed to qualify which was my main goal this year. Thanks to all my opponents and the GT crew for their efforts. Good times!Sentinelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13483874659853638814noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1711786341778745116.post-88992685891157370662013-09-22T10:26:00.001-07:002013-09-22T10:26:27.214-07:00Food For Thought: ETC Pairings Theory on Hive Fleet Hyenna

Pairings at team events like the ETC is a whole sub-game in itself and something that captains and players can spend a great deal of time and effort on. I'm not sure how other events work, but at the ETC each country's lists are published before the event, which allows teams to run the numbers and consider possible match-ups.

Erle over at Hive Fleet Hyenna has put together an interesting series of posts going into his theories as Team Belarus' Captain. If you're interested in this sort of thing or perhaps looking to spy on an opposing team, I recommend taking a look!

So I've been analysing my games at Brighton and thinking more about the list. There is one particular unit that on further reflection I don't think I've betting the most out of – the plasma Company Command Squad (CCS) in the chimera. This unit fills the compulsory HQ slot, provides mobile high strength, low AP shooting and orders. The multi-laser and heavy flamer are really a bonus and the chimera adds to the light mech saturation.

What I've found is that I tend to use the CCS in a backfield role, keeping within 12” of my heavy quad launchers (aka thudd guns), usually giving them the Fire On My Target order and forcing successful cover saves to be re-rolled for the target enemy unit. I also like the option to try a Bring It Down for re-rolls to hit with the thudds if an MC or vehicle is sitting in the middle of a bunch of infantry when the rune priest is off using Perfect Timing elsewhere.

CCS (centre) between thudds (left) and where the fight will be (forward right)

However, I think that the unit is a bit conflicted in where it wants to be. With orders I want to hold back, but the plasmas and a transport mean that I want to push forward to get into rapid fire range. I don't think I'm really getting the most out of the unit in every game so I've started to think if there is a better way to spend the 100pts from the plasmas and chimera.

Hiding from Tau

So what do I need to add to the list?

Reviewing my games leading up to and at the tournament, I've noticed that in certain match-ups I want to be extremely defensive, at least for the first couple of turns before setting up late game objective grabs. For example, in my game against Sharon's extreme shooting Farsight Tau with Tau allies and my fourth game against Steve's Forge World Sisters and Imperial Guard I wanted to stay out of sight to minimise early casualties. In the face of an enemy that I know can out-shoot me I don't see this as a bad thing to do (especially if they get first turn), but I want to be able to do more damage whilst conserving my mobility and scoring units.

Tau castle sans bubblewrap

I also want to be able to punish anybody castling against me. In my last game at Brighton against Jeff's Tau, he deployed his vehicles in the extreme far corner behind a ruin and wisely kept all his squishy foot targets in reserve to avoid my thudds. I'd like to be able to threaten this sort of enemy deployment with a high strength pie-plate to force the decision between clumping to make the most of cover or spreading out to minimise blast casualties. I can already do this vs infantry with the horrendously efficient thudds, but I'd like to do the same against vehicles and multi-wound targets with T4 or below.

The answer is of course long range barrage, and I've started to dream of a second allied heavy support slot to allow me to take a manticore. This is not exactly breaking new ground, but with prescience these can be devastating. I suppose I could force myself to spend 50pts on the third thudd gun instead. Oh, well...

FW - Converting these guys for the Commander and MoO

But wait! Perhaps there is another way outside of the IG heavy support slot? Two options spring to mind – Marbo and the Master of Ordinance (MoO). I could fit in either with a bit of tweaking, and both provide a high strength, ordinance and barrage-like effect. I have considered the Pskyer Battle Squad (PBS), but I'm not sure that I want to rely on Ld9 psychic powers and deny the witch attempts on top of scatter and cover rolls.

Scratch-built las-sabres - not perfect but ok for now

So Marbo or the MoO+something else? I've said before that I'd like to add lascannon sabres at 1750 points and above for better punch vs AV13 at range. I could 'upgrade' a couple of hyperios for 30pts extra. I think this is a better deal than Marbo thanks to orders effecting the sabres and more turns shooting with the MoO (even if significantly less accurate), so I'll go with this and drop a couple of flamers from the Platoon Command Squad to cover the shortfall (still leaves them with two).

This leaves me with:

1650pts Space Wolves and Imperial Guard 40kUK GT Heat 2 List

Rune Priest, Jaws, Living Lightning
(IG) Company Command Squad, Master of Ordinance

4x 5 Grey Hunters, Razorback (Heavy Bolter), plasma gun
2x 5 Grey Hunters, Razorback (Heavy Bolter), melta gun
(IG) Platoon;
Platoon Command Squad, 2x flamer
2x Infantry Squad
2x 1 Sabre Defence Platform, lascannon, searchlight (IA Aeronautica)

3x 2 Hyperios Missile Launchers (IA Aeronautica)
(IG) Vendetta [130pts]

(IG) Heavy Quad Launcher Battery (3 guns with 9 crew) (IA 2 2nd Ed)

1650pts

So I've lost three plasma guns, a chimera, a couple of hyperios and a couple of flamers, but gained 4 more S5 AP5 barrage blasts, two scoring las-sabres and an unpredictable S9 AP3 ordinance barrage large blast. This gives me more threat and punch at range, while hiding if required, and judging on how I'm playing the lists, I think I'll get more use out of this than what I've lost.

I've moved the Hyperios back to Fast Attack, as the GT have ruled that as the IA Aeronautica and IA12 units have different names, they are actually different units and one does not replace the other. This is excellent news, and I can definitely see the logic (especially when it helps me out!).

Another one of these then! Note this was not an in-game shot...

I was going to wait until the new Space Marine codex dropped, but from the rumours (which pretty much turned out to be correct!) I couldn't spot anything that made me want to swap the puppies out for marines just yet (although Tigerius and the initial Tactical doctrine every turn got very close...). I've had a couple of games with the revised list (managed a win vs a serpent spam list in relic and a win vs an Iron Hand drop pod army with 4 ironclad dreads in a 3 objective Crusade) and it already seems better suited to how I want to play the army, so I'm happy so far. The heat is only three weeks away now, so we'll see if this list is up to scratch soon enough...
With White Scar biker armies heralded as the next big thing, I thought I'd compile a few links covering playing with and against biker armies. As I'm expecting that there may be a few at the upcoming 40kGT, I'm very interested in knowing how to beat them too!

I'm also expecting a few players to avoid bringing MCs to the tournament thanks to how many grav guns might be kicking about, and if they happen to have a chaos army too, I wouldn't be surprised if they decide that the good old helldrakes need to get some fresh air.

So with that in mind, I thought these articles might be interesting to anyone playing with or against bikers (White Scars, Ravenwing or otherwise):

Ravenwing basics and tactics on Skuzzlebumm's Skuzzlebutt. Plenty of battle reports there too, including ETC games.

Discussion on counters to White Scars (and some counter-counters!) on 40k War Zone.

Some initial list ideas on the White Scars blog and Sons of Sanguinius. Sure they are plenty of others popping up too.
There is a brilliant discussion going on at Craftworld Lansing at the moment looking at defining critical mass in relation to list building.
It has finally arrived! The new Codex Space Marines has been released and if you're interested in a peek, had over to Natfka's Faeit 212 for a good first impressions video. This focuses mainly on general content and artwork, which I have to say is looking fantastic. I think the chapter title page artwork is particularly cool, and the centurion image looks a lot better than the models!

I'm looking forward to the next few days as we get everyone's first impressions of the new rules. Assuming that the majority of the recent rumours are accurate, things that initially grab my interest are Tigerius, barrage thunderfire canons and Raven Guard massed scouting in dedicated transports. White Scars bike builds may turn out to be popular, but with the prevalence of high strength ignores cover weaponry around we'll have to wait and see on this one. As a MSU mech player, I'm not keen on the marine trend of increasing the base cost of a razorback! Doesn't bode well for my Wolves! More thoughts to come once I've had a good look at the codex.

Interestingly, there is no release day FAQ (yet), but any codex with servo arms gets a minor update. Convenient link for you here!
